Required Summer and Supplemental Enrichment Reading

In the Memoria Press/ACA literature curriculum, students read three or four good books in depth with study guides every year. Students should also be reading additional books during the school year and especially during leisure time in the summers.

ACA Required Summer Reading books will be provided by ACA. Please return them to school in the fall. Students should be prepared for a class book discussion and simple quiz over the assigned reading during the first week of school.

Rising Grade 6:

Rising Grade 7:

  • Boys – Mr. Midshipmen Hornblower

How to Use the Memoria Press Supplemental Reading List

Any books on the supplemental list that are marked with a red asterisk (*) are assigned at ACA during the school year. These should be omitted from summer reading for current students if they have already covered them during the academic year. Additionally, students should not read selections slated for grades ahead. However, for all new students, at a minimum, those which were assigned during the school year for grade level just completed, should be read in addition to any required reading for the rising grade level.
For each grade, books suggested are suitable for the summer before that grade, during the school year, and the summer after that grade. Books from higher or lower grades may also be good choices for your student, depending on his or her reading level and interest. These lists will be most useful for those who know the reading level and interests of their students.
One caveat. Students can become lazy and resist reading books above their comfort level, particularly if on their own. It is important to include some books in their pleasure reading that are somewhat challenging, books that you may occasionally have to help them push through. Ideally, parents and students will enjoy reading the more challenging selections together. The goal is to continuously raise the reading level of your students.

Summer Latin Preparation
Rising 6th – 8th grade students need to maintain their Latin flashcards over the summer. Please work to keep your vocabulary knowledge fresh in preparation for the fall semester. Alternatively, see HLS supplemental recommendations here.
